CONTEST WINNERS!
REI GPS

Brent Bryne, wife Aubrey and daughter Blaze
Congratulations
to Brent Byrne of Eagle River, the winner of
the North America Outdoor Institute 2007-08 REI feedback contest.
NAOI collected more than 6,000 entries statewide from our Be Snow
Smart avalanche awareness education program. All participants
that attended a Be Snow Smart training session were invited to
provide their feedback to help us with continuous improvement.
The winner was drawn from all entries and presented a Garmon Trex
GPS compliments of REI.
Byrne, a firefighter and paramedic in Anchorage, has firsthand
experience when it comes to avalanches. He controlled them as
a former member of the Denali Ski Patrol at Alpenglow. “I‘ve
stood on top of a small one and that was enough for me to respect
it…” he said.
As an avid outdoorsman, Byrne loves anything to do with snow.
“My license plate on my truck is LVSNOW. This includes skiing,
snow machining, camping…” He admits that now that
he has a young, growing family, he’s traded in some of the
toys for a travel trailer for his wife and kids. The family spends
time hiking and driving from Kenai to Fairbanks and will put his
prize to good use.
As the father of two very young children, Byrne says he chooses
the events he attends carefully. “I love the outdoors and
find the winter recreation show is always a great way to kick
off the season. My brother and I both have a lot of experience
in the field and find it extremely valuable to have a refresher
class in avalanches every year. This is a great program and I
look forward to seeing the North America Outdoor Institute at
shows like the Winter Recreation and Travel next winter educating
the public about snow safety.”

CONTEST WINNERS!
ORTOVOX
BEACON, SHOVEL, PROBE
Mary Crowley with children (from left) Ben, Abbey and Justin
Congratulations
to Mary Crowley of Big Lake, the winner of the 2007-08 Ortovox
Quiz contest. The North America Outdoor Institute collected more
than 4,000 entries statewide in this year’s contest. All
participants were required to complete a five question quiz to
determine their comprehension of the material presented during
the Be Snow Smart training presentation. The winner was drawn
from all correct entries on May 15, 2008.
Crowley attended
a Be Snow Smart helmet safety program presented at the 2008 Iron
Dog snowmachine race safety check-in held February 2nd at the
Wasilla Sports Complex. Crowley said she and her family are big
outdoor enthusiasts and enjoy dog mushing, snow machining and
many other sports. She said the award of the Ortovox beacon, shovel
and probe are a welcome addition to her families safety equipment.
“We have
some equipment but not enough,” said Crowley. “The
avalanche equipment is something we definitely did not have enough
of. We’ve been trying to work it into our budget so this
is wonderful news for us.”
Crowley is
the mother of two teenage boys and a teenage girl. Fifteen-year-old
Abbey mushes dogs with Mom, while 17-year year-old Justin and
19-year-old Ben love to ride their snowmachines. She said she
and her husband are very safety conscious and have attended two
previous helmet events with their children but felt this year’s
program really helped them.
“This
was by far the most in-depth program we’ve been to,”
she explained. “The photos and video were very effective,
especially for my kids. Plus the instructor (Daniel Dryden) was
very relaxed, comfortable and knowledgeable. He asked really good
questions of the audience and had great answers and lots of helpful
tips.”
“We are
really glad that someone has continued to offer this program,”
said Crowley. “We recognize that it’s so important
to understand snowpack and to learn simple things you can do to
be able to have fun and stay safe.”
